Clayton Richard: Rehab Edition
First off, I would like to apologize to AvengingJM for not having a Luigi fathead made for Clayton Richard's rehab start in Des Moines. I hope that I will be forgiven since the money that could have been spent on a gigantic Luigi head was, instead, spent wisely on craft beer. It was very hard for me to spend money on Luigi in any way possible. Had I gone through with the fathead, it would have likely wound up in a dumpster outside of Principal Park, because I'll be damned if that was going to find a home in my apartment.
Anyways...on to the subject at hand...the rehab start. Richard started the game by beaning the first hitter he saw. I recall telling my buddy Jeff, "Yeah...that looks about right", and then immediately facepalmed. Clayton, of course, would make up for the free pass by firing one of his patent-pending pickoff throws to 1B, catching the Iowa Cub completely off-guard. A groundout and a swinging strikeout later, Clayton got out of the 1st inning unscathed.
The beginning of the 2nd inning had a very 2013 Clayton Richard-esque feel to it. The lefty swiftly gave up three well-hit singles to load the bases with no outs, and a big inning for the Iowa Cubs seemed immanent. However, Clayton was able to buckle down and allowed only a sac fly and struck out the following two hitters to leave the T-Pads with a manageable 0-1 deficit.
The remainder of Richard's outing was pretty stellar. He finished the evening with 6.0 IP, 4 H, 8 K, and only allowed a single earned run. Brad Boxberger also had a good evening, striking out two batters in the 7th inning. Tommy Layne pitched the 8th and walked one batter while retiring the other three Cubs that he faced. Unfortunately, the T-Pads bats were ice cold. Matt Garza pitched 6 solid innings for the I-Cubs, and the T-Pads went 0-for-2 with RISP. I-Cubs take the first game of the series from the T-Pads. Final score: 1-0, Iowa over Tucson.
