Mike McCoY: The day after

No, that's not a typo.  I intentionally spelled McCoy's last name with a capital "Y".  Do you see what I did there?  CoY stands for Coach of the Year.  Okay, perhaps hanging the kind of accolade on a guy that is barely 24 hours into his first stint as a head coach is a little bold, but make no mistake, I am very excited about this hire.

I was at work when one of my co-workers, a huge Broncos fan, came back to the office and told me, with a not-so-happy look on his face, that we took their offensive coordinator.  Just the fact that he was a little pissed off brought a smile to my face, and I knew that all was well in Chargerville.  I honestly did not expect the Chargers to make a decision on a head coach until after Bruce Arians was interviewed.  Arians was considered by many to be one of the front-runners for the Chargers' head coaching job, while Mike McCoy seemed to be a favorite to land in either Chicago or Arizona.  Dean Spanos and new general manager Tom Telesco would not allow those teams to make an offer.  For the Chargers, this has definitely not been business as usual.  Hiring Telesco and McCoy were smart, bold, aggressive moves by Spanos and the Chargers.  The experience at their respective positions might not be there, but the potential most certainly is for Telesco and McCoy...and that is cause for optimism and excitement.  Time will tell if the 40-year-old duo are the right men to lead the Chargers back to prominence in the AFC.  For the moment, things just feel right.
